Baylee Holbrook, a vibrant student and varsity cheerleader at Palatka High School in Putnam County, Florida, tragically lost her life following a devastating incident while hunting with her father. During a bowhunting trip on Tuesday, lightning struck a nearby tree, causing it to fall on the father-daughter duo, rendering them unconscious.
Baylee’s father, Matthew, regained consciousness and immediately called 911, initiating CPR while waiting for rescue personnel. Despite their efforts, Baylee remained unconscious. She was eventually transported to HCA Florida Putnam Hospital before being transferred to a trauma center while in a stabilized condition.
The Putnam County School District superintendent, Rick Surrency, expressed the profound impact of Baylee’s loss on the community, citing a moving vigil attended by numerous friends and locals who gathered to honor her memory. Described as inclusive and loving, Baylee was cherished by all who knew her, transcending various social circles at Palatka High School.
Known for her love of boating, turkey hunting, and bowhunting, especially with her father, Baylee’s tragic passing prompted her father, Matthew, to share a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, highlighting their profound bond and her positive influence on his life.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) issued a warning following the incident, alerting residents to heightened storm activity in the area and advising precautionary measures due to increased lightning strikes.
“The recent surge in lightning strikes in our vicinity serves as a reminder of the looming stormy weather. The forecast predicts continued rain, thunder, and lightning. It’s crucial to stay vigilant as storms can emerge swiftly, and lightning poses a danger even several miles away from rainfall,” cautioned the PCSO statement.
